• Home-Grown Loofahs

One of the most exciting things we planted in our little productive patch last spring was loofah seeds.  We have grown food in all different shapes and sizes over the last couple of years, but never have we grown organic sponges, so it was a new novelty.

The loofahs grew in a little mound of cow manure and without any attention whatsoever they absolutely thrived.  The vine was also grown on the western side of our chicken coop doubling as a surprisingly affective sunscreen for our hen house, and providing a constant display of bright yellow flowers along the way.

In recent weeks the fruit had finally dried enough to peel away the skin, and inside (as promised on the seed packet) was a loofah, ready to slice up and use - just like that.  The best part of growing these treasures is that once you have grown them for the first time, they will provide you (and potentially everyone you have ever met) with enough seed to continue to grow them year after year.
