• In Production - Spring 2014

It's mid season again, the time where I 'take stock' of what our little productive patch is doing.  This is a task I relish as it forces me to stop and see all that is happening in the garden, and it reassures me that all the time and energy we are putting in is actually paying off.

Eating daily from the garden was somewhat of a fairytale concept to me - in my mind if it ever happened it would be years and years in the future.  I am totally amazed at how in less than one year a substantial portion of the fresh produce we consume is from our own backyard.  I say this to encourage anyone considering the possibility of homegrown to try it - in less than one year from the time you pick up your shovel, you will be shoveling delicious, organic, fresh food off your plate.

Pictured above is a colander full of broad beans harvested by D (just one of many broad bean harvests in the last couple of weeks)- those plants are prolific producers!  Needless to say I have been blanching and freezing, storing up some green goodness for a future lull in the patch.

New to the Patch

New to the patch are six asparagus plants which we are pretty excited about - almost all of the fresh and canned asparagus available to us is from Peru or Mexico, so growing our own has been a high priority.  Also new to the patch are butter beans, sage and in preparation for summer the most luscious mint plant ever, grown from a cutting taken from the Maitland Art Gallery (D would probably want me to disclaim here that I took the cutting).  We also have a sweet potato tuber on the go and some seed potatoes.
