• Awaiting Harvest - Heavenly Priorities

Proverbs 24:27

Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.

One of the most exciting things about moving into our home last year was the thousands of square metres that made up our backyard.  Our desire to grow real, organic food was all of a sudden completely possible and nothing but time and energy stood in the way of our harvest.

The temptation, though, once we got the keys was to put our initial time and energy into a simple interior paint job and complete some of the trimmings that the previous owner builder didn’t get finished, these few projects would transform our house completely and being such an aesthetically minded person it was my highest priority.

But challenged by the wisdom of a very timely proverb (Proverbs 24:27) it suddenly made sense to tend our land first and then, once fruit trees and veggie patches were firmly in the ground, roots going deep, branches stretching out, compost composting, flowers budding - everything growing, to then put our hands to the task of completing the inside of the house while we wait for our harvest.

We are now a year along in this food-producing journey and we have planted many things. Fruit trees, veggies, herbs and citrus of all kinds.  The harvest for some we have already enjoyed, and others we will wait days, months, even years for, but the joy and excitement of watching them grow has already begun and that’s the greatest harvest of all.  Our nosy four-legged neighbour totally agrees.
